In terms of electroplating, patina and patina chemicals refer to the chemical reaction (oxidisation) formed on the surface of a metal which usually give the metal a different colour and the chemicals that are used to do so. Patinas can be applied to many metals but the most common are copper and copper alloys (used in jewellery and art) and steel (used in large sculptures and artworks). The range of colours achievable and the ease of finding the chemicals and mixing the formulas is why patinas are so widely used as a post-plating process.
