Everything You Need to Start Electroforming at Home (Complete Kit List)

You do not need an industrial setup to get started with copper electroforming. A 5-litre tank on a workbench covers most jewellery work, and the list of equipment is shorter than most guides make it look. What matters is having the right components, connected correctly, with safe chemicals.
The tank
The tank holds your electrolyte solution and needs to resist acid. Polypropylene (PP) and HDPE plastics are both suitable, as is glass. A standard PP storage box works well for home use and is inexpensive to replace if it degrades over time. Never use a metal tank unless it is fully lined with rubber or vinyl. Bare metal corrodes in the electrolyte and contaminates the solution. A drip tray underneath is optional but a very good idea; it catches any spills and splashes and adds another safety layer to the process.
The power supply

The power supply must deliver direct current, DC, not AC. Alternating current will not deposit copper. Look for a unit with adjustable voltage between 0 and 15V and adjustable current between 0 and 5A, with a digital readout for both. The readout matters because you will be watching the amperage throughout the run, particularly in the first 15 minutes when you are dialling in the correct current density for your items.
Anodes
The anode is the positive electrode. It sits in the tank connected to the positive terminal of the power supply, dissolves slowly during electroforming, and replenishes the copper ions that are being deposited onto your work. Use PDO copper — phosphorised and deoxygenated — with a copper content above 99.9% and a phosphorus addition between 0.04 and 0.06%. The phosphorus helps the anode dissolve evenly and dramatically reduces the amount of sludge that forms in the solution.
Do not use copper pipe, scrap copper or electrical wire. These contain other metals and impurities that either co-deposit with the copper that produce a rough, grainy finish or oxidise in the acid, dropping to the bottom of the tank as sludge. The saving in cost is not worth the damage to results.
Anode bags

Wrap your anodes in anode bags before they go in the tank. These are made from polypropylene cloth and act as a filter, catching copper sludge particles before they reach your work. A 10-micron bag handles the largest particles; a 1-micron bag over the top catches the smaller ones. Running both together keeps the solution cleaner for longer and reduces the frequency of batch filtering.
Electrolyte chemicals

The electrolyte has three core ingredients:
Copper sulphate provides the copper ions that deposit onto your work (aim for 200 to 250g per litre).
Sulphuric acid supports conductivity and anode-cathode polarisation, at around 45 to 90g per litre; handle it carefully, because even at low concentrations it will burn skin on contact.
Brighteners and levellers are the organic additives that control surface quality. Without them, copper deposits dull and pink. With the right concentration, it comes out bright, smooth and mirror-like.
Mix everything with distilled, deionised or reverse osmosis water. Tap water contains impurities that interfere with the deposit and can cause all sorts of problems that are difficult to trace back to their source.
Conductive paints
Conductive paint is what makes your item part of the electrical circuit. Without it, the copper has no surface to bond to. Three main types are available:
graphite
copper
silver
Silver paint is the best performer. It has the highest conductivity and the finest particle size, so copper starts depositing within 2 to 5 minutes of going in the tank, and it spreads evenly across the surface from the start.
Graphite paint is cheaper and widely used, but its lower conductivity means copper grows outward from the wire connection point rather than covering the whole item at once. The first 30 to 60 minutes look uneven, which is normal.
Copper paint works well immediately after drying, but the copper particles begin to oxidise as soon as they are exposed to air, and conductivity drops steadily. Items painted with copper paint need to go into the tank as soon as the paint is dry.
Wiring and the bus bar
Items hang in the tank from a bus bar, a conductive rod that spans the top of the tank and connects to the negative terminal of the power supply. Copper wire suspends the items from the bus bar and makes the electrical connection to the conductive paint. Crocodile clips work in testing situations but cause problems on longer runs: copper builds up over the clip and fuses it to the item, and the pivot joint corrodes quickly in the acid vapour. Hooks or wrapped wire give a cleaner connection for production use.
PPE
The electrolyte has a pH below 1, which means gloves are on every time you handle chemicals or work at the tank. Rubber, vinyl and latex all work well. Check them regularly for small holes, which are easily caused by wire ends or sharp edges on items. Goggles go on when you are lowering items into the tank or lifting them out — that is when splashes are most likely. A mask is needed if your workspace is not well ventilated or if you can smell the electrolyte, since that smell indicates chemical vapour in the air around you.
Keep a neutralising solution nearby at all times: 100g of bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 1 litre of water. If electrolyte contacts your skin, apply it to the affected area immediately.
Optional but worthwhile
There are a few items that won't stop you from electrforming if you don't have them but will definitely help the process:
A tank heater is worth having from autumn through to spring in the UK. Acid copper runs best between 25 and 27°C, and the operating range is 18 to 30°C. Below that range deposits become patchy and slow; above it the brighteners break down and need replacing.
A filtration unit, either an internal pump or an external canister filter, keeps the solution clean and provides the gentle circulation that helps even out brightener distribution across the tank.
A rinse bottle filled with pure water is a simple addition that saves chemical waste by letting you rinse items over the tank before removing them.
What you do not need
Air agitation is not recommended for home setups. The bubble action creates a fine mist at the surface that carries chemicals into the air around you, increasing both the safety risk and the demand on ventilation. Circulation agitation from a filter pump is safer and more effective. You also do not need a large tank to start, a 1-litre setup works for single small items, and 5 litres covers most jewellery work comfortably.
